Ruminations on Summer
Written by Sullivan Jordan
Summer. The time of year when possibilities seem endless. Where mornings are slow, and nights are warm and full of energy. The days are long, yet are short and sweet when looking back after all is said and done. Summer is midnight gelato runs, sleepovers with childhood friends, picnics on the beach or at the park. Summer is reading until a sunny morning becomes late afternoon. Summer is thick with potential yet lazy all at the same time. We romanticize it and long for it as we endure cold, dark winters, but we keep going for the promise of summer. The promise of reinvention and finally becoming who we want to be. Summer kind of holds that special bit of magic doesn’t it?
Summer is long flowing skirts, farmer’s markets brimming with baskets of peaches and strawberries and blueberries. Summer is smiling as we laugh and dance with new friends and old friends. Summer is sharing long dinners with friends who feel like family from far away. Late nights becoming early mornings as we catch up on the years we’ve missed. The little moments become where we find the most joy. The small, everyday things that we take for granted are suddenly put under a microscope, and we remember how rewarding and fulfilling life and the world can be, and has been all along. These are the moments that stay with us forever. We remember that the person we are inspired to magically become during the summer is who we have been and there is no reason to hibernate. These small joys don’t have to leave when the summer months end and the long sunny days are washed away in the rain and snow.
When summer comes to a bitter end as the days grow short, the sun less frequent, and the clouds more dense, all we have are the memories, captured in photos, videos, and some of the best ones live solely in our mind, always there to be relived as once again, we embrace autumn, sometimes hesitantly, knowing summer will come again.
